What would you expect from a counsellor?

As you may or may not know, I am studying to be a counsellor. I'm not sure how this will act out at this point in time- maybe school chaplaincy, maybe as part of an organisation, maybe private practice, maybe connected to a church.

I have a question that I would love to hear your answers to. What would you expect from a counsellor? Or, perhaps, what do you see as the role of a counsellor?

HI Tracey,
Been reading your blog. Glad that things are going well for you.
Re counsellor - someone that has taken the time to get to know you -not just come in, hours up, so go away now. But there are different kids of people. Maybe have a survey at the front door? 'Do you want me to get to know you?' or 'Do you want to just vent, and get some perspective'.

I expect them to listen to me enough to understand me before asking me if I've improved in an area that I told them wasn't a problem in the first place!

I went to a GP who decided he was a counsellor. He was convinced I had a bad marriage and anger problems even though I told him I didn't have anger issues and my marriage was great. He kept asking me if my anger and marriage had improved through stuff he said.

It made me very angry!
