Redemptive Moments in Karaoke History
Last night I got to do some karaoke with some buds in Hobart. This is something I did a few times when I lived there and it was nice to visit the old stomping ground and belt out a few tunes.
Choosing songs can be difficult. There are some traps for young players. Upon standing in front of a large crowd with a microphone in your hand you realise:
1. The song is too high/low for you to sing
2. It is a completely different version to the one you know
3. You actually only know the chorus. (This can be made worse when the entire crowd knows the song really well and look at you contemptuously while singing it word- perfectly under their breaths).
I have made these mistakes. I used to care a lot. I now practice an attitude of caring less, combined with learning from former mistakes.
I sang 3 songs last night:
Fame (I've always wanted to do this one!)
River Deep, Mountain High (Done it before, knew I could do it!)
Respect
The last song is the cause of the redemptive moment. A few years ago I chose to do Respect at a karaoke bar in Melbourne, but realised, upon holding a microphone in front of a crowd, that maybe I didn't know it very well- and it's not really the kind of song you can make up as you go. It was also a bit high in the ol' register.
Last night, though, I nailed it. Well, I think I did. Enough for a drunk guy to come up to me afterwards and say 'That was f@#*in' awesome!' That's enough for me.
My work here is done.

I totally know how you feel about those traps for younger players! I was at karaoke in Burnie with people from work and I got up to sing "Build Me Up Buttercup" with a girl from work. We didn't know any of it except for the chorus. And the timing seemed different. It was bad.
But later I sang "Suspicious Minds" with another girl from work and we fully nailed it. It was actually really good. And we had a couple of older guys ask us later if we were going to sing again. A good feeling.

Yes, I have fallen into the same traps (Scartissue, far too low)- etc.
Tis a wonderful feeling to nail a particularly tough and liberating song - imagine heaven's karaoke parties.... those moments of success are moments of pure delight...
